EXPERIENCE:
Mr. Kus tries civil and criminal cases in both state and federal
courts. He defends people and organizations accused of
crimes, as well as clients in civil suits, and prosecutes personal
injury claims for them. He appears before the various
administrative agencies on cases involving civil rights and job
discrimination claims. He prepares briefs and argues appeals
before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit and the
Indiana Court of Appeals.
EDUCATION: Mr. Kus earned his
undergraduate degree from Indiana University (B.S., 1973) and his
law degree from Drake University (J.D., 1978). He served as
Law Clerk to the Honorable Allen Sharp, Chief Judge, U.S. District
Court, Northern District of Indiana (1978-1980).
BAR ADMISSIONS:
He was admitted to the
Indiana State bar in 1978 and to practice in Indiana and U.S. District
Courts, Northern and Southern Districts of Indiana, Northern
District of Illinois, Western District of Michigan, U.S. Court of
Appeals, Seventh Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court).
AWARDS:
Mr. Kus was selected by his peers for inclusion in the The Best
Lawyers in America and was also named an Indiana Super Lawyer.
He earned the previous distinctions every year, from 2005 to 2011.
Mr. Kus also earned the highest possible Martindale-Hubbell peer review rating (AV) for legal ability and professional ethics.
PROFESSIONAL MEMBERSHIPS:
He is a member of the La Porte County Bar Association, Indiana
State Bar Association (2005-2006 Litigation Section-Council Member
District 3), Seventh Circuit Bar Association (Northern District of
Indiana Liaison Representative), and the American Bar Association.
He is President of the Board Directors
of Northern District of Indiana Federal Community Defenders, Inc.
and has served as both a member and officer since 2004.
He is also a member of the National Association of Criminal
Defense Lawyers. He
is a Fellow of the American College of
Trial Lawyers (2007), and served as a State Committee Member from
2007-2010. He is also a Fellow of the Indiana Bar
Foundation.
