Business Law, Probate and Taxation

EXPERIENCE:  After clerking for a federal judge and practicing with a large firm in Chicago, Mr. Volk began his practice with NLK&J in 1972.  Since then, he has concentrated his practice in business law, estate planning and estate administration.

He has formed hundreds of partnerships, corporations and limited liability companies. He regularly represents people in the purchase and sale of their businesses. He likes to work closely with the client’s accountant to assure that the client receives complete and coordinated business law and tax law advice. Because the business of many clients extends into many states, Mr. Volk established close ties with many excellent lawyers across the country. To that end, he was a founding member and sits on the Board of the Legal Netlink Alliance, a worldwide legal organization dedicated to providing high quality legal services at reasonable costs. See www.legalnetlink.net.

Mr. Volk also spends a large part of his time planning the estates of his business clients and anyone else who may need his help.  This includes the drafting of wills and trusts, as well as living wills, living trusts, and powers of attorney.

Mr. Volk’s probate practice is closely related to his estate planning.  When a client dies, Mr. Volk is there to assist the family in putting their affairs in order.  This includes locating assets, assisting in the payment of debts, and giving advice regarding the Indiana Inheritance Tax and the Federal Estate Tax.

In addition, Mr. Volk is a Certified Alternative Dispute Resolution Mediator by the Indiana Commission for Continuing Legal Education.

Mr. Volk earned the highest possible Martindale-Hubbell peer review rating (AV) for legal ability and professional ethics.

EDUCATION:  Mr. Volk earned his undergraduate degree at Loyola University of Chicago (B.S., 1967) and his law degree at Indiana University School of Law (J.D., magna cum laude, 1970).  He was elected to the Phi Sigma Tau honorary fraternity and the Order of the Coif.  He served as Associate Editor, Board of Editors, for the Indiana Law Journal (1969-1970). From 1970-1971, he served as a law clerk to the Honorable Jesse E. Eschbach, Chief Judge, U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Indiana, who later served as a Judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.

BAR ADMISSIONS:  Admitted to bar, 1971, Illinois; 1972, Indiana, U.S Court of Appeals, Seventh Circuit, U.S. Supreme Court

PROFESSIONAL MEMBERSHIPS: Mr. Volk is a member of the Bar Associations of La Porte City (President, 1983-1984), La Porte County (President, 1988-1989), and Indiana State.  He is a member of the Aviation Law Committee (Chairman, 1983-1991, 1997-1998) and is a Fellow of the Indiana Bar Foundation.

LEADERSHIP: Mr. Volk is current or past chairman of the following organizations: Unity Foundation of La Porte County; Greater La Porte Chamber of Commerce; Greater La Porte Economic Development Corporation; Aviation Law Committee of the Indiana State Bar Association; La Porte Municipal Airport Authority; and the Aviation Association of Indiana. Mr.Volk was a founding member of Leadership La Porte County and served on the organization’s Board of Directors for 20 years.  In addition, he has been an instrument rate pilot for more than thirty years.  This experience has led him to represent individuals, businesses and municipalities in various aspects of aviation law.
